Ken Simmonds Memorial Cup

KEN SIMMONS MEMORIAL CUP 2006/07 PATH TO THE FINAL PRELIMINARY ROUND SEPTEMBER 24TH Due to the enlarged Division Two, six ties were played in the Preliminary Round. The undoubted game of the round saw Headstone Reserves come through their tie at Watford Labour Club by the odd goal in nine. Headstone raced into a first half 5-1 lead and although the home side pulled back three goals they were unable to force extra time despite heavy pressure. Bovingdon twice came from behind to win 5-2 against the 2005 semi-finalists 3 Lions. Another side to come back from behind were Evergreen as they won 3-1 against West Watford Conservative Club after being one goal down in the first five minutes. Loop Construction had a straightforward 4-1 win over struggling Croxley Green and Riverside Seniors crushed Interwood 7-1 thanks in part to double hat tricks from Stuart Duce and Richard Akinlawon. FC Boca Seniors lead Colne Valley Blues early on and the scores were level at half time before two second half goals and an own goal put Valley into the last eight. QUARTER-FINALS - DECEMBER 3RD, 17TH & JANUARY 7TH Heavy rainstorms wiped out three of the four quarter-finals scheduled for the first Sunday of December. The only game played saw Riverside Seniors cruise into the semi-final with a 5-1 win over Ecocall. Two week later, they were joined in the last four by two of their fellow title chasers, Colne Valley Blues and Bovingdon. Colne Valley Blues defeated Evergreen 4-1 whilst Bovingdon won 6-1 at FC Sherman. Loop Construction completed the semi-final line-up on the first Sunday of January as they, like the other quarter-final ties, had an easy 5-0 win at Headstone Reserves. SEMI-FINALS - JANUARY 7TH & 28TH The two semi-finals were played at either end of January due to the postponed Quarter-Finals. The first game between the Divisions top two sides produced a close game but it was Bovingdon who took the lead early in the second half but the Blues soon levelled after a goal-mouth scramble. The next thirty minutes produced an end-to-end cup tie but the deadlock could not be broken. In extra time, Bovingdon went ahead for a second time only to see a dramatic fight back as the Blues forced Bovingdon on the back foot. With only six minutes remaining, the Blues equalised through Andy Bisley to set up a tense finish and with just two minutes left Luke Clark added the winner. The second semi-final played four weeks later between Riverside Seniors and Loop Construction was a more straightforward game. Riverside booked their placed in the final thanks to three goals inside the first thirty-six minutes that effectively killed the game as a contest. Loop fought back in the second half and a Pat Napier strike on sixty-five minutes gave them some hope of a fight back but this was ended eleven minutes from time as Riverside scored their fourth goal to put the result beyond doubt. KEN SIMMONS MEMORIAL CUP FINAL 2007 Sunday April 15th 2007 COLNE VALLEY FC BLUES 0 RIVERSIDE AFC SENIORS 2 (HT 0-2) The OSFLs Second Division top two sides produced a good game made difficult by the hot weather conditions. Valley had a good early chance in the second minute when Andy McKenzie-Bell broke into the area from the left wing only to fire into the side netting. They were made to rue this chance when Riverside took the game by the scruff of the neck with two goals in six minutes. After eight minutes Jason Olcot broke into the box and lifted his shot over David Durbridge for the lead and just six minutes later Richard Akinlawon raced through the Valley defence to fire home the second. Valley battled their way back into the game and were handed a lifeline on the half hour mark with a penalty but Simon Dean could only smash the ball against the cross bar with Riverside keeper Sean Holohan beaten. The second half saw Riverside content to sit back and stop Valley from playing. A change to 3-5-2 formation with eighteen minutes left almost had the desired effect when Luke Chapman saw his header hit the top of the crossbar and go over and a couple of efforts were scrambled away from the Riverside goal whilst Akinlawon was always dangerous on the counter-attack. A deserved win for Riverside who took their chances whilst Valley were left to rue theirs.
